If oil is coming out of the power steering cylinder on a 1999 528i bmw can it be removed and repaired?

are there o-rings or seals in the cylinderIf oil is coming out of the power steering cylinder on a 1999 528i bmw can it be removed and repaired?
Yes , and should be!If oil is coming out of the power steering cylinder on a 1999 528i bmw can it be removed and repaired?
Normally the power steering cylinder can be resealed but is very time involved and parts are normally worn out with in the cylinder. Better off with a rebuilt, which will carry a warranty, and also these part is a safety item on your car. So I would not take the chance of a sub standard repair. Also check all hoses, and connections, seals, and other components involving the steering system, and use the proper approved fluids for that vehicle.
;you can remove the power steering unit and have it rebuilt. Things wear out over time and just new new seals, bearings, and gaskets. My suggestion is take it to a reputable mechanic that can repair it, and warranty the work in the event that the repair doesn't hold.

My recently purchased Sonata 1996 has oil deposited underneath the engine. Should I get major repairs done?

I got the Oil changed after buying the car. After regular checking I found that the oil level did not drop. But based on the oil deposit the Hyundai 4S garage has advised to have some major work done on the engine to stop oil leak, which will cost a lot. What should I do?My recently purchased Sonata 1996 has oil deposited underneath the engine. Should I get major repairs done?
Just keep an eye on the oil level .. if the car is not smoking while you are driving and the oil level is not dropping the oil may have just been some left on the frame of the car after the oil change.. If you still see some oil spots under the car when you park it overnight it may be a front or rear main oil seal.. annoying but not urgent unless you start to loose a lot of oil.My recently purchased Sonata 1996 has oil deposited underneath the engine. No, given the diagnostic provided to you. ';Major work to stop leak'; Nice way to make a grand. Get a second opinion ALWAYS. Chances are, its a 10 yr old buildup of grime etc.I would ask someone to clean the engine bay, with specific attention to the oiled area, then do as the answerer above suggests. Oil light flickers on after a blown head gasket was repaired 92 celica?

I blew a head gasket on my 92 Celica. This was repaired and then the oil light would flicker on and off for the week after. This stopped and after 2 months of it driving it has been fine, until my bf had to repair a coil in my distributor and some other oil leak and now the oil light flashes on again!! I have noticed this flashes on when i am idle and the fan on the radioator (?) kicks in... anyone know why?? After the gasket was repaired everything to do with the oil was changed and it has only started once the coil was fiddled with...??Oil light flickers on after a blown head gasket was repaired 92 celica?
sometimes when you work on a motor things get dropped into the oil pan like little pieces of gasket material, and these little pieces collect on the screen of the oil pump and slow up the pumping action of the oil pump, and the oil pressure drops and the oil light will flicker when the oil changes pressure do to the clog. also when the radiator fan kicks in ,there is a electoral draw on the alternator and that pulls the motor down a little and the oil pressure drops a little and the light flickers again. Good Luck.Oil light flickers on after a blown head gasket was repaired 92 celica?
a flicker generally is not a falsle reading...

especially if this happens at stops or at idle in gear.

THE OIL LIGHT IS PROBABLY FLICKERING BECAUSE THE ENGINE IS TIRED AT IDLE WHEN THE FAN TURNS ON THE MOTOR IS HOT AND RUNNING SLOWLY THE LOAD CREATED BY THE FAN ACTUALLY SLOWS THE MOTOR EVEN MORE THE SLOWER THE MOTOR TURNS THE LOWER THE OIL PRESSURE WILL BE TRY RAISING THE IDLE SPEED A LITTLE
1 - idle too low

2- using light that dang light weight engine oil.

3- the dude mech blocked an oil gallery in the head buy putting gasket backwards or put seal goop on gallery hole.

4- idiot guage sender is toast.

Id recommend taking real readings with a real gauge after getting thicker oil in it.
ok.....let's begin. This is the order of events I believe took place.

1) cylinder head blew, mixing coolant with oil. coolant is a poor lubricant, and allowed the crankshaft to bite into the bearings, increasing the clearance.

2) cyinder head replaced, possible gasket debris got into the motor, but unlikely. (can plug up oil pickup screen)

3) new oil put in......possibly thinner, but I will give credit to the mechanic for putting in regular 10w-30 oil.

4) the ';new'; bearing clearances between the crankshaft and the bearings are wider now, and allow oil pressure to bleed off at a faster rate, lowering overall oil pressure the most when oil is at its thinnest(hottest).

I recommend a thicker oil to take up the slack in the system, and the oil pressure checked with a guage.

As for the coil problem.....make sure he replaced the distributor cap, too. Ignition coils are MURDERED.....so something had to kill it, right? Bad plug wires/bad cap and rotor can cause this. Replacing only the coil alone won't work for long.....something else in the ignition system is wrong.

Don't forget to clean the throttle body to aid in fast starts and smooth idling.

Oil Pressure Valve was not tightened on car, and engine blew, What needs to be repaired?

I AM PRETTY SURE IT WAS THE PRESSURE OR SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT. The people who are responsible for this are going to ask for the bare minimum to be repaired, which would be a new engine, or hell maybe even a new engine. What else should be repaired/replaced?

I want to take it safe. I am not paying the bill. I AM GRATEFUL FOR ANY ADVICE. THANKSOil Pressure Valve was not tightened on car, and engine blew, What needs to be repaired?
If your not paying the bill and the shop that did the work is have them stick a brand new engine in the car not a rebuilt or a used because you never know how it was treated before. They have insurance that covers their **** ups so I would demand a new engine.Oil Pressure Valve was not tightened on car, and engine blew, What needs to be repaired?
If the engine is blown, it needs replaced. Running metal on metal at 3000 times a minute without lubrication is going to destroy everything inside in short order. If the engine was stopped immediately after the valve blew out, it may be possible to rebuild it. If this was the shops fault, and you aren't paying for the repair, tell them they need to replace the engine. You will most likely get an engine from a wrecked car, so make sure you hound them for all the details, (mileage, etc.) and make them put a warranty (in writing) on the replacement motor.
An oil related failure on an engine will affect every rotating component. i would have it completely disassembled and all parts measured and inspected. if you do not then you may be OK for a year, then the engine will fail and they will not pay for it again. If they will only do the bare minimum, make sure that all oil lines and the radiator which probably has an oil cooler is replaced. Small metal pieces in the oil travel through the system and they will be caught until the engine gets to full temp and then they will start to circulate through the system causing the same failure again. Don't let them tell you they flushed it, it's ';OK';. That's a lie. Try to have the work done at your mechanics and have them reimburse you for the cost. That gives the garage a fiduciary responsibility to you. In other words your paying the bill so they have to make you happy!! Good luck!!
A engine of equal value. If your engine has 100k then your gonna get one in that millage area.Be thank full that the garage ain't giving you a hard time about it,a lot of places would.

Which is the best oil to uses when repairing wood ?

    which oil repairs wood best?

    olive oil

    rapeseed oil

    or linseed oil ??

thanks :pWhich is the best oil to uses when repairing wood ?
I would use linseed oil.Which is the best oil to uses when repairing wood ?
if it is just an oil to help protect the surface a bit and bring out the grain i personally would use Danish oil or teak oil these are the two oils i use on solid wood work surfaces after i have installed them you can get theme from most good diy stores
Oil doesn't repair wood. It depends on the type of protection you want. Also finished color is a concern. I've had good luck with Tung oil. Check it out. Go to a large home improvement store or woodshop and compare finishes, color, price, ease of application,etc....
are you a student with a number of homework questions?
My choice would be boiled linseed oil.
    linseed oil.

Should I go to a Honda Repair Center for Tune-up and Transmission Oil change?Or a Local mechanic is enough?

    Hi,

I'm planning to have my newly bought USED car, Honda Civic 2000 LX (automatic transmission) have a tune-up and transmission oil change.

I went to Honda and the tune up will cost about $220++ and the transmission oil change will cost $75.

The tune up covers all replacement needed, like cap and rotor/air filter/sparkplugs/high tension wires.

My local mechanic (which is also a good one), said that I just to pay him $90 and I should all buy the parts (for tuneup and transmission oil). $90 for labor.

    My other questions are:

When Honda tunes up the car, do they run some sort of test? Like special tool to check if the car is properly tuned up.

I'm afraid that my local mechanic will just replace the parts for tune up and will not test it. I don't know if he has the appropriate tools available.

    2) With Transmission oil change, is my mechanic good enough? He actually told me that I could do it by myself to save money. But I don't want to do that.

    Please help.

Thank you.Should I go to a Honda Repair Center for Tune-up and Transmission Oil change?Or a Local mechanic is enough?
    PARTS:

Ive worked on many cars and worked for shops in my day. One problem with local Mechanics. Is even if their quite good they tend to use Infior parts. They get their parts from local parts stores at ';commercial'; pricing. (ie on your parts list lets say you have a part that costs the local mechanic $10 they charge you $15 or $20 now retail on this part is $22. Lets just say the part from the dealer is $25 you feel like your getting a good deal, but the part may go out again) Honda and most auto dealers us OEM - Factory parts They are of a much higher grade even though every auto store %26amp; mechanic will tell you that they use OEM grade or better. All that means is that the parts are to spec and dimensions. And will work in the application.

Many make statements on how their parts are better/stronger etc than factory OEM. With Honda and most Import (Japanese especially) There is a major difference with the components in the parts them self's. That being stated some local mechanics may use bargain basement parts to increase their parts sales margins (remember the $10 part let say they found it for $5 and its from China and made of lowest grade Components)

    The shop itself:

There is a differnce between a Local mechinic and a Technicin. A mechinic may or may not have gone to school to learn how to work on cars. A mechnic may or may not be certified. A Dealer technicnician typically has gone to school and learned the ';proper'; way to work on a car (theres may ways to fix somthing, some folks do it with a whole lot less banging and bending) and technicians typically are certified in something.

The local mechnic may not be all that bad and the cost savings may just be worth it especially if you persdonally know them. But the dealership usally has all of the epquiptment needed to properly repair and maintain your automobile, if you travel or have problems with your local guy stick ewith dealer.

The ';tool'; you mentioned sounds like a scanner. Scanners cost anywhere from $50-$5000 or more. Modern car computers can not only tell you whats wrong with your car but at what rpms %26amp; speed you were going when the problem happened. They can also tell you problems that may normally go unoticed. A scanner reads the codes the computer puts out. so.... the local mechnic may be so good that he knows what parts to replace with out looking at it or scanning, but hes only guessing and eventually his luck could run short. In his defence Im sure he does have a scanner, may not be the high grade expensive one a dealer may have but may have enough features to get the job done. Any mechnic who doesnt have a scanner of some type and works on modern cars is to be highly avoided (and I hope dosent exist).

As far as the tranny filter........

Heres where I dout your mechanic, did he actually look at the tranny pan on your Honda? I have dealt with a few hondas in my day and even thogh most can be quite easy a few can be pretty involved. Im not to fimular with your car however. Some cars have supension/support braces running across the pan of the transmission (with not enough clearnce to change filter properly) and must be removed to do the job right. Someone who doesnt do this may bend the pan and cause the tranny to leak.

    There is a new movement in auto tranny fluid maintnence. What they do is put a tool down the neck of the transmission dip stick and it cycles and filters the old fluid. Its reported to remove water, sand and tiny metal shavings. I am not much of a activist of this, but its better than nothing and cheaper. what it doesnt do is change the tranny filter/screen in the pan or the magnets in the pan (maybe to a lesser extent but not clean). {They put maganets in the pan to keep tiny metal ';sludge'; on the bottom of a pan}

SO, I think any Mechanic/Technician that allows you to get parts your self is not (generally) out to get your money. Good parts stores are dealers some national parts stores but be carefuel some of their good parts are the same as cheap ones with differnt colors and warrenties. I can say for me NAPA always seems to have top notch parts but you get what you pay and vise versa. Just ask for OEM manafucture (the ones who made the parts in the first place) OEM evqulivent/better if the guy behind the counter looks 14 and says that there the same, there not.

Good luck and happy hunting, (No Good Mechinic Installs Bad Parts, Only Bad Mechnics Replace Good Ones.) Sorry my spell checker is quirkieShould I go to a Honda Repair Center for Tune-up and Transmission Oil change?Or a Local mechanic is enough?
get your local mechanic, its not hard to do and he will get you on the road and running. The honda will charge you lots of $$ for the same work as te mechanic did
Local mechanic is perfect if they have good rep.

    Honda will charge you more
When I tune a Honda, I do things that most dealerships DON';T do. I start with a thorough power washing of the engine compartment with GUNK orange. I do this with engine running and warm. Any deficiencies in plug wires will show up now. very RARELY do the factory wires need replacing. Then, I clean the throttle body and the IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE with butyl cello-solve and gum-out spray. (This is VERY important!!!) Then I remove the distributor cap for an inspection. I wash everything down with CRC chlorinated brake cleaner. Then I decide if a new cap and/or rotor is required. I run these chemicals through the engine to remove deposits from intake, O2 sensors, converter, sensors and other goodies. If your technician is good, this is what he'll do. I would only let the dealership do a trans fluid change, since Honda makes it's own trans fluid formula, Dexron-H!!! If anything should go wrong, they will be responsible. Make sure that your timing belt is checked for wear!!!! Good luck!!
I'd go to Honda for the first service. They will be more thorough in checking any recalls or Technical Service Bulletins for the car. I'm sure the mechanic is fine and will do a good job, but for me, I'd rather have a very good baseline on where the car stands if it were me. I know money is always an issue, but the difference is not that great, plus you can be sure the dealer will use true Honda parts and that DOES make a difference. You need to be prepared for the dealer to find things they suggest need doing, but don't take this as a sign of dishonesty. It's unlikely they will suggest things you don't need, and you can always say no.

  • Engine damage due to no oil. How possible is a complete repair?

I found a car I really want at a great price....heres the story.

Man ';A'; finds car that other man ';B'; is selling due to damage from lack of oil. Man A is a mechanic that works on this type of car almost daily. He is able to repair it to near perfect running condition.

Now I find this car and man ';A'; is selling it at a reasonable price cause he got it for super cheap and fixed it as a personally project. He says he has been driving it for a couple months now. How likely is this story? I have no idea how much damage was done due to the lack of oil.....and would like to purchase the car if it runs fine and a second mechanic does a check up on it....reasonable?Engine damage due to no oil. How possible is a complete repair?
Sounds reasonable to me, as a person who has restored cars, fixed cars, and built an engine or two.

For $50 or so you can get an engine oil analysis that will tell you the metals and stuff that are present in the engine - which will indicate how the engine is wearing.

Have the seller bring it to Quaker State or another quick lube and get an oil change, but take a sample for an oil analysis. Then bring it in to an independent shop for a look over. They will want to look at oil pressure, compression, and listen to the engine with a mechanic's stethoscope.

A car that passes those tests would be one I was comfortable driving.Engine damage due to no oil. How possible is a complete repair?
I personally would not under any circumstance buy a car that has been run with no oil. It will have to be rebuilt. That is probably the worst thing you can do to an engine. Stay away from it, unless you plan on having the engine rebuilt
sounds like a story-when something sounds to good to be true its not true--pass
If it was run without oil then it had to be completely rebuilt. All depends on how good of a job he did. Be careful.
It all depends on how long/how far the engine was run without oil. Cylinder walls could be scored and give you trouble 'down the road'. No pun intended.Find out what weight oil he has in it. Heavy oil is an old trick to hide problems. Then the final thing would be the price.

Well depending on the make and age of the unit, if there are any replacement parts available for it. Get me the model and serial number from the unit and I can check to see if there are any parts available for it. You can check out our website

    www.phoenixairsupply.com
You will need to replace it. Check out the hvac ratings page at my source. Click on boiler ratings to compare brands. You may want to upgrade to a high efficiency unit.
I used to use a product in apartment roof units where replacement was not an option. it was simply called '; boiler sealer'; It was not available to the public but times have changed. Check in your area with commercial boiler service companies , or possibly find a welder with portable equipment. you will have to drain the system but it is cheaper than a new boiler

Is the oil and coolant replaced and filters when performing head gasket repairs ?

yes yes yesIs the oil and coolant replaced and filters when performing head gasket repairs ?
you should always change the oil after changing a head gasket. Due to coolant and pieces of gaskets getting into the crankcase. the antifreeze could be strained and reused if it is tested and is still good. however I would recomend you just replace it. you should also replace the thermostate and any hoses that are showing signs of ageingIs the oil and coolant replaced and filters when performing head gasket repairs ?
its supposed to be as well as the spark plugs and wires too
    IT SHOULD BE
yes you have to as you have to get the water out of the oil.
if not i would be asking for my money back
Only if they charged for it. The work can be done wothout changing the oil since it's all in the bottom of the engine at the time of service. The coolant will have been drained (necessary to remove the head), but it's possible to pour it back in again afterwards - so long as it's kept clean.

However, since a bad head gasket will often contaminate your coolant and/or oil, it is strongly recommended that you go ahead and replace them. Otherwise, you could be looking at a bigger problem in the near future.

    Good luck!
    IT BETTER BE REPLACED.

THE OIL AND FILTER HAVE TO BE REPLACED ALONG WITH THE COOLANT.

I just drove 10 miles after the oil change and the oil filter fell off, when i was on highway. I pulled-off %26amp; checked my engine to see that there was no oil left. My engine got locked out!

I reported to the Jiffy lube %26amp; customer service person says that they will take care of the repair. Means, they will replace my engine with a used engine.

What would be the best resolution at this point?

Should i go to small claims court %26amp; get a compensation for the car rather than going for replacing the engine? I dont know how it will work out and how long it would take. I dont have any contacts with a lawyer to take legal views etc.

Make sure you have all the documents mentioned aleady.

Also get a statement from them, in writing that they screwed up.
Have it fixed by your regular shop. Submit the bill to them. Sue if they refuse to settle. Log all contacts with names. Pain in the butt but they will pay one way or an other. They will maintain new/rebuilt not what you came in with. Try to reach agreement in advance if possible. They will recommend shop to do work, check them out in person. You do not have to use them, but it may go faster if you do.How much time and money do you have?,is the question. Court probably will not award price of new motor.
find out more info from them......dont be afraid to ask.....and tell them what you want!
Document everything - work order paper, time of work, time leaving the place, time when car shuts off, promise by Jiffy Lube if you can put it in writing.

Once you have all tangible evidence, you can decide your options..

Inquire a trustworthy shop how much to replace a rebuilt engine and decide if you would still trust Jiffy Lube to rebuilt your engine.

Keep all paperwork just in case everything go sour and you have to pursue legal path.

    Good Luck.
Of course, they're in the wrong and you can sue them if you have a good lawyer. Just know that it will take time especially if they drag their heels. In the meantime, you will have to get other transportation like a rental and add the cost of that to your compensation. Why not speak to a lawyer or legal company that won't necessarily charge you for just inquiring if you have a good case?

If you don't want their version of compensation, then going with a lawyer is your best bet.

    Good luck.
Not a big deal. Tell them you want a rebuilt engine with a warranty (ussually one year but the car will last longer) if they don't agree take them to small claims you don't need a lawyer for that. They should be providing you with a rental car until yours is repaired if not sue for that as well. Don't let them push you around they are clearly liable and will have to pay a lot more money if it goes to court. Get on their butts.
Karen, I personally saw a Toyota Camry in the dealership (Toyota) last winter for the very same reason as yours. It had been sitting there for six weeks and they had heard nothing from the parent company of Jiffy Lube which is Pennzoil. Be sure to fill out a claim and demand the work be done at your local Toyota dealer. If I were you I'd haunt Jiffy Lube for a car rental while yours is in the shop. If they move like a proverbial turtle spend a few bucks on an attorney to make some calls and find out exactly what you as a consumer has as far as rights go.

Don't let them drag things on.
Jiffy Lube is notorious for this, I actually make a killing thanks to them because im in the used auto business.... Sue em

My xr250l ran low on oil and seized. It runs but how much to have it fully repaired?

I have a 1991 XR250L that ran low on oil and seized. It runs now that I put oil in it and it doesn't really have a loss in power but in the casing there is a clicking noise that kinda scares me. I think that some of the metal expanded, though it cant be too bad since it runs fine.

My question is how much(rough estimate) would it cost to have it fully repaired? My xr250l ran low on oil and seized. It runs but how much to have it fully repaired?

you can buy a used engine or a rebuilt engine cost about $1,200.00 tops at schucks or Autozone, you can buy a complete engine at www.jcwhitney.com and have to pay shipping. Much better price and warrenty. Report Abuse

  • Oil burner is constantly circulating. Repair people out 3 times...say everything is working fine...thermostate

is off...temp in home is 73...this happens on a weekly basis..I manually turn the burner off...the repair men come...they have replaced wires for thermostate, aqua stat box, and last time said they couldn't find anything wrong. After you turn the burner off for several hours and turn it back on, it seems to stop the constant heating...then after it runs for a week or so, starts all over again. Heater is winter/summer hook up with 2 zones. When I am having this problem the circulator seems to constantly hum.Oil burner is constantly circulating. Repair people out 3 times...say everything is working fine...thermostate
Hmmm..Sounds to me like you have solenoid operated valves in the system that open and close when heat is called for. The circulator pump SHOULD run continuously in this case, and the valves should open and close on the thermostats. If you have two zones, then you should have two thermostats.

Those zone valves have a manual override on them so you can open them by hand, but if you do, they will be open forever and cause continuous heat. Check them out. There is a small lever on the side where the wires connect. If the lever is down, the valve has been manually overriden and it will supply constant heat to your house. Make sure that lever is in the upright position. (I think it might say ';Auto'; and ';Open'; on the valve, make sure it's in the ';Auto'; position.)Oil burner is constantly circulating. Repair people out 3 times...say everything is working fine...thermostate
Did they replace the thermostat? It could be your problem.

We need to replace ours because it was doing the same

thing but it is an older style thermostat.
I'm having trouble with your language. It sounds like you have an oil fired boiler, but what do you mean ';oil burner is constantly circulating';? An oil burner 'burns' - there's nothing to circulate. Do you mean the oil pump constantly operates? Do you have a two line oil supply? Do you mean the boiler pump is constantly circulating?

Oil Furnace boiler leaking water? Repair or replace?

Hi and thanks to those who read and respond to my post.

I think the oil furnace boiler is leaking water internally. I did my spring furnace clean, and found the soot in the bottom of the boiler inside was moist. Before, inside was VERY dry and easy to vacuum. Soot does not smell like fuel oil. The concrete pad around it and the water heater is damp, but not wet. (Gas Water heater just replaced and problem remained). There is also evidence of water in the flue pipe, with dried rust stains on outside of pipe. The furnace was very noisy this season at shutoff.

Is this a leaking boiler, or could it be something else? Is is repairable, or time to replace? The hot water unit (Vaillant) is about 20 years old. The Igniter unit (Blue Angel) is about the same age.

Thanks for your helpOil Furnace boiler leaking water? Repair or replace?
At 20 years old I think it would be wise to replace it with a more modern unit , I just went through the same with mine once they start leaking then some other part goes,it doesn't run as smooth or efficient as it used to etc. If you can't afford getting a new one or want another opinion ask your service people to evaluate it for no charge.Oil Furnace boiler leaking water? Did you check your chimney to see that the rain cap was still on? Maybe that is where the water is coming from.
yeah, sounds like its from outside. the water is under pressure and if it cracked,ud have lots of it

If my car was low on oil could it damage car, if yes what would i have too do to repair it..?

if i get a new engine for a vauxhall astra 1.6LS x reg how much would it be? plus wud it affect the value off my car?

thank u xIf my car was low on oil could it damage car, if yes what would i have too do to repair it..?
Oil is called the ';blood'; of an engine. In a car magazine, they once drove a car with no oil to see how far it will go. They got about 500 miles. I'm surprised they made it that far.

So with no oil, 500 miles. With good oil - 100K to 200K miles. So now you have an idea of how important oil is.

    ====

If you have done damage by having too little lubrication, every part of the engine was ';rubbed'; raw. Every moving part is probably now worn down. Just about the only (general) thing is that you should have your engine rebuilt (or do an engine swap). If you were to do an engine swap, you have the option of getting a good used engine or completely new engine from the factory.

If you were to replace the engine with an exact duplicate / replacement then if would not effect the resale value that much (who would know). As a buyer anytime I get the knowledge (or feeling) that the previous owner did NOT take care of one part of the car, it tells me there are other hidden problems. If my car was low on oil could it damage car, if yes what would i have too do to repair it..?
are you sure the oil is making it get hot ?if it shows enough oil on the dipstick it should be alright ,shouldnt get hot, id think more like a stuck thermostat or plugged radiator ,low on coolant, radiator fan not working . id check out those areas if my car was overheating
Yes, if your oil gets too low, it will damage the engine.

If minor damage, a thicker oil may suffice. If major, a new engine.
It depends on how low it was and for how many miles. As long as engine has enough oil for lubrication, it will be okay. Engine probably will be okay if you had a quart or so. The reason for the extra oil is for cooling. With the recommended oil level, the engine will run cooler. The hotter it runs, the faster it wears.
If the oil was right off the dipstick then yes, it can damage it seriously. However, sounds much more like a cooling system problem - lack of coolant, clogged radiator, stuck thermostat, several things. I'd get those looked at first before worrying about an oil problem.
Cars can generally run ok when the oil only just shows on the dipstick. You have to completely run out for it to become a problem.
Yes, being low on oil over a pretty short time could seize the engine. Since there are no Vauxhalls in the US I can't predict a price, but an average engine job on a small 4 cylinder here runs at least $2500 USD, usually more.
What do you mean, specifically, when you say running low on oil?

If you mean that the oil check/dipstick has gone down to the ';add oil'; mark, then engine damage is very unlikely.

If the reading has dropped entirely off the stick, there is very little oil left in the engine sump, so damage is very possible, as you do not know how much oil is left to lubricate the engine.

You MIGHT still be OK, if the low level exists for only a short time and short distance, but you might also be into the area of saying goodbye to the engine. Except by draining the sump, you cannot tell how much oil is in the engine, so you cannot know what the possibilities really are.

I would suggest taking it to a mechanic and asking for a check of the engine.

To avoid an invitation of bad results, do NOT mention your concern about oil. Ask about the car overall, and ask only about the engine condition because you are considering a sale of the car.
Most definatley. If will ruin you car quick, fast, and in a hurry.

repairing depends on how hot you let it get. Normally if you run it too long without oil, it will lock up. You can say goodbye to that engine.

If not It usually will required major repairs.

I've never heard of a vauxhall astra 1.6LSx reg engine. Go to a dealer and ask him for the price!
If you run low on oil providing you have topped it up to the correct level and there is no unusual noise from the engine,or smoke of a blueish colour from the exhaust then the oil will not cause it to overheat but a cooling problem will---loss of water

  • The oil pan on my 97 Taurus is rusting with a small leak can it be patched and save a 500 repair to replace it

Yes you can save 500 bux! Go to your local junk yard and have them remove the oil pan that you need from a junker. That should cost you about 50-80 bux.You can either remove the pan yourself and put the good one on (make sure you go to an auto parts store and by some blue devil sealer) or you can have one of the local guys in your 'hood put it on for a few bux. So instead of paying 500, it could cost you from85-200 bux. Good luck!!The oil pan on my 97 Taurus is rusting with a small leak can it be patched and save a 500 repair to replace it
if it has actually rusted through, which would seem unusual as it is full of oil which inhibits rust, then it probably is not structurally sound enough to be repaired. u might go to local welding shop and ask them to take a look at it and give it a spot weld. The oil pan on my 97 Taurus is rusting with a small leak can it be patched and save a 500 repair to replace it
you can try welding it , be sure to clean it before you weld with a low temp welder
You have nothing to lose trying it. Try JB Weld products.
i had a pin hole leak and got repair kit from advance...i drilled hole bigger/size the directions said and put in rubber plug...it has wing nut in middle...tightened it and no problem for 6 yrs...
you can give a shot at welding it. their is nothing to lose. if it doesnt work, then you will have to go with the 500 dollar replacement.

A NEW GASKET IS ABOUT $30. AND A SHOP WILL PROBABLY CHARGE 1 HOUR TO REPLACE IT. NO MORE THEN $150.00How much is the average cost of repairing a car with a leaking oil pan gasket?
depends on what is in the way of the oil pan coming off.

some cars have to have the engine pulled out part way to change the oil pan.
About one hour labor, a gasket and an oil change. No more than $200.
If someone recently changed that gasket I would take it back as they have over tightened the bolts. If that is not the case the cost should be under 50 bucks.

Category; Maintence %26amp; RepairsMaintence %26amp; Repair; 3208 turbo diesel have oil in cooling system whats up with this %26amp; what are my options?
Oil in the cooling system is a bad sign.

Should only be water and coolant in their.

Best case: you have a blown cylinder head gasket.

Worst case: a crack between coolant chamber and some other part of block or head.

A shop can diagnose this using a compression test on each cylinder and tell you where it has blown.

Isnt it funny how the market is repairing itself and oil prices are going down without the bailout?

How is it the republicans say, let the free markets prevail? I say let them.

In my personal opinion, it's exactly what the markets needed, let me correct that, it's what the citizens of America needed. If the markets keep going down, maybe the average American will once again be able to live a decent life in America. The cost of everything was getting out of control. Corporate America thought they were invincible and could do no wrong. I hope enough Americans are now pissed as hell and demand better oversight and a cut in these obscene executive level compensation packages. Most working slobs get paid, they get compensation packages.Isnt it funny how the market is repairing itself and oil prices are going down without the bailout?
Yeah that is what they said the Great Depression was lol ';the market correcting itself';.

Maybe you should have been around back then to provide entertainment.

But hey we don't need trillions of dollars of foreign central banks' and foreign investors' money in our economy anyway riiiight?Isnt it funny how the market is repairing itself and oil prices are going down without the bailout?
It is not correcting itself. Did you not notice that the market dropped, which has been affecting other countries as well?

If something is not done it will create a catastrophic domino effect not only in the US but the world economy as well.

Oil prices are dropping due to expected global economic slowdown - less industrial output, less business traveling, less tourism, etc. In addition, oil was selling at unnaturally high prices. It was only matter of time before the prices corrected themselves.
The market is NOT correcting itself!
irrational exuberance is now seeing a market correction

Is olive oil a good hair mask for repairing damaged hair?

My hair is dry from dying it and heat styling it. Is this a good way to repair it?Is olive oil a good hair mask for repairing damaged hair?
About a month ago I had extremely dry and damaged hair so I understand where you're coming from. I tried a lot of different masks, including olive oil, but I've found that the one single thing that has brought back moisture to my hair was to avoid shampooing it for 2-3 days at a time. This will allow your natural oils to build up and you can then use a boar bristle brush to brush the oils down to the tips of your hair, coating the strands in beneficial oil. Also, when you do shampoo, use just a nickel to quarter-sized amount of shampoo and only shampoo the roots. Deep conditioning masks only mimic a smooth surface on the hair by just coating it. This doesn't always last and quite frankly there isn't much you can do about the damage now but to keep your hair moisturized. So avoid shampooing for a while and invest in a boar bristle brush. My hair got back to normal after about 3 weeks of just washing it every 3 days.

Side note: your hair will feel greasy at first but give it some time. Your scalp will adjust and lower the amount of oil that it creates. You'll then have to use less and less shampoo as time goes by.

Good luck :)Is olive oil a good hair mask for repairing damaged hair?
Buy a hydrator or reconstructor from a salon. $20-$25 a bottle. They work i swear to you! Don't waste time and money on conditioners from no name stores. I recommend Joico's K-PAK. Joico makes both a hydrator and a reconstructor. The hydrator is a 3-5 minute leave in and rinse that restores moisture stripped from heat and the reconstructor has 19 amino acids(the foundations of hair) that your hair needs to grow. Good luck.
My mom likes to put mayonnaiseand raw eggs together and put it in my hair, i guess it gives it a lot of protein wich is really good for your hair! but only leave it in for about 5-10 minutes or it could seriously damage it even more! but after that it's really shiny and soft! do like every 3 days or so!
You can't completely reverse this type of damage, but you can start taking better care of it (and this includes staying away from dying or heat styling as much as possible).

Olive oil can improve texture by restoring moisture, but it's really hard to wash out.
    uses 1 egg white

    1 tablespoon of olive oil

    and 1 avacado

it will make your hair super shiny plus it does help with damage

btw dont heat your hair alot give it a break
    not really

    your hair isnt dry

    its burnt

    sure, you can try

and it might help a little, but it wont be much better

My honda accord 1988 is leaking oil from the rear main oil seal, what is the procedure to repairing this issue?I have a 1988 Honda Accord Lx-i, what is the procedure to repairing a leaking rear main oil seal?
Rear main oil seal would consist of removing transmission and clutch assembly (if manual). The seal is located on the rear of the crankshaft.

What are the causes of oil entering your cooling system? What repairs can be done to fix this problem.?

Looks like antifreeze hasn't been changed in a long time and liquid is of brown muddy color. temperture indicator reads normal. no over-heating yet. Was told can not flush out cooling system until cause of oil leak is found. How costly would these repairs be?What are the causes of oil entering your cooling system? What repairs can be done to fix this problem.?
Just because it is brown doesn't mean that it's oil in the coolant. Coolant will usually turn brown due to rust deposits if it hasn't been changed in a very long time.

Have an experienced mechanic perform these two tests: first, apply a coolant system pressure gauge on the radiator or expansion tank opening. Have the engine run and see if pressure builds and fluctuates. If it does then combustion pressure is entering the cooling system indicating a bad gasket or cracked or warped head.

Second, have the mechanic probe the radiator or expansion tank opening with an exhaust probe. A higher than normal hydrocarbon reading indicates oil in the coolant.

You can usually see streaks floating across the water if there is oil in the system. You can always flush the coolant, it won't hurt anything. It's just that it won't solve a bad gasket, cracked or warped head or cracked block. What are the causes of oil entering your cooling system? What repairs can be done to fix this problem.?
is your anti-freeze orange or green if its orange then drain it flush the system and add new antifreeze you probably have a chevy car that's normal condition cause of the orange anti-freeze.but now say it was oil and it was brow-redish color then check you trany oil is it pink or red automatic transsmission cool the oil usin the radiator coolant like a heat exchange if that's crack then you'll see oil in coolant an coolant in trany oil. hope this helps you
Oil in the coolant would be floating on top and have a very distinct petroleum smell to it.

If the coolant is just a muddy brown color, it's probably just rust. Get it flushed and put in new coolant.
the place on the radiator where the transmission lines are hooked up to probably has a hole in it and you are mixing transmission fluid and anti-freeze together.
Probably a bad head gasket is causing the oil to mix with coolant.
IT COULD BHE A BAD HEAD GASKET OR A CRACKED BLOCK.

Is there anything that can help an oil leak until I can get it repaired?

I have a 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis. It has a terrible oil leak. I do not know the specifics yet of where the oil is leaking from, but I am now having to put 4 - 5 quarts of oil in my car a week. I was advised to use 20w-50 because it coats the engine better, but I honestly don't think that's really making a difference. Is there anything I can do to slow the leak down until I have the money to get it repaired? Is there anything that can help an oil leak until I can get it repaired?
They make stuff you can pour in your engine to stop leaks - DO NOT USE IT! It will gum up in your engine, and the repair bills will be much worse than just fixing a leak.

Just make sure you keep a few extra quarts in your trunk and keep checking the oil levels - if it runs our you will throw a rod and then you'll have to buy a new engine. Is there anything that can help an oil leak until I can get it repaired?
You have a real problem, but it may not be very costly to repair. I'd take it to your service person and ask him to find the leak. If it's the plug or maybe the pan gasket, that's cheaper than buying that much oil every week. Often such leaks are very simple to fix. I hope yours is one of them!
hi 4 to 5 quarts is a lot of oil first thing i would do is degrease the engine and then have a look to see where the oil is coming from most of the time it will be coming from the oil sender or the oil filler cap seal is buggered a short term fix for the oil sender is remove it and put plumbers tape around the thread and put it back if the oil cap remove it and put a rag of some sort there then replace the cap . if not any of these you have a major problem i would guess at saying your oil rings are shot to pieces and the oil is burning away. hope this helps
is it leaking or just burning it?

4 to 5 quarts a week sounds like a loose drain plug or a bad filter sorry to say if i was you i would park it until i had the money to at least get it looked at
not really, it has to be fixed, any type of additive will only thicken the oil (you're already using 20-50w a thicker oil). It might just be something loose or the front engine seal may be blown. You can't tell until it goes up on the rack for a look.

How to repair an ATV oil leak ? Please help...?

I am not mechanically inclined and if you'd be so kind to explain, I would really appreciate it very much...

If you're getting on the ATV from the Left or pull start side, there's a

slight oil leak coming from the bottom of the pull start cover. Is that called the crankcase cover? Anyways, Is there a seal that goes in there? There are 4 allen wrench type bolts that hold the cover on, but they are tight. I would drain the oil, but want the seal or gasket to before I take the cover off... or any recommendations you can give me.

The ATV sat a while and the person who I got it from may of overfilled the oil. Repair info? How to? Is it an easy fix?

THANKSHow to repair an ATV oil leak ? Please help...?
    1. FIRST DRAIN THE OIL AND FILL ACCORDING TO SPECS IF TI STILL LEAKS THEN IF ITS LEAKING ON THE PULL START SIDE YOUR WILL HAVE TO TAKE THE 4 ALLENS OUT TO GET INSIDE

    2. YOU'LL HAVE TO TAKE THE BOLT FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE COG. IMPACT WORKS THE BEST CAUSE IT WILL WANT TO SPIN AS YOU LOOSEN IT AND UNDER IT YOU WILL SEE THE SHAFT SEAL IT WILL HAVE TO BE PRYED OUT (CAUTION DONT DAMAGE OR GOUGE THE SHAFT)

    3. EMERY CLOTH THE SURFACE THE SEAL RIDES ON THE BEST YOU CAN

    4. LIGHTLY LUBE THE INNER SHAFT SEAL

    5. INSTALL SEAL BEING CAREFUL NOT TO DAMAGE IT BIG SOCKET THAT FITS CLOSE TO THE OUTTER SEAL DIAMETER WORKS BEST

    6. REINSTALL THE STARTER COG AND SPACER BEHIND IT IF IT HAS 1 AND REINSTALL PULL START ASSEMBLYHow to repair an ATV oil leak ? Please help...?

I got a hair-line crack in my oil pan. Would J.B Weld be ok to repair the crack or would it cause problems?

I think that you have been well warned off from that type of welding. However, if you decide to go that way then you would be advised to stop the crack from spreading by simply drilling holes right at the ends prior to welding.I got a hair-line crack in my oil pan. Would J.B Weld be ok to repair the crack or would it cause problems?
Either weld it or replace it - the consequences of losing the oil in your engine are simply too great to trust to an epoxy repair - JB Weld is great stuff but it won't prevent that crack from spreading.I got a hair-line crack in my oil pan. Would J.B Weld be ok to repair the crack or would it cause problems?
Better fix it right, the oil pan inst the place to be experimenting with things. It likely will not hold and will be leaking again.
pay a little now for an oil pan or PAY a lot for a new engine when this one runs out of oil due to a piss poor repair job on the oil pan
It won't cause problems but it will not work. The expansion and contraction will cause it to come loose.
    Leannes absolutley tright
IT would be hard to clean it good enough for j.b. weld to work !!!

The oil is very clear, even close to looking like water. When getting my car repaired, the mechanic changed the engine oil. How do i find out what oil he used?
You do have a mouth ? ask them what kind of oil did you used to put in my carWhen getting my car repaired, the mechanic changed the engine oil. How do i find out what oil he used?
Send him a coded message then it will be a secret just between you two.

You could ring and ask or look on the bill to see if he has specified the oil

There might be a lable stuck some where in the engine compartment or door pillar, goandavaluk.
They usually put a sticker in the window on the driver's side if you live in the USA. This gives you the brand of oil, the last time it was changed and the next interval time to change the oil again. Or just ask.
you have to ask the mechanic.

if you're particular, you can bring in you own oil and/or filter and they'll will just charge you for the labor and whatnot(disposal fee, if applied)
there are a lot of types of oils used incars. easiest way is to ask him
call the mechanic that did the work and ask him.
ask your mechanic, or look on your service reciept. If you are concerned about the water like look and you think he used cheap oil, buy what you feel is the correct oil, and have him change it. when you get an oil change, it is best to read your manual for recommended grade, or some cars have the grade recommended on the fill cap.
    ask him!!!!

Has anyone received reimbursement for VW Oil Sludge repairs?

I've heard of the oil sludge issue, suffered from it myself, produced records for immaculate maintenance history and been rejected by VW of America for reimbursement. They say they'll reimburse if you can prove you didn't abuse your vehicle, yet I have found NO ONE that has received an ';approved'; from VW with a check for the costs related to the sludge.Has anyone received reimbursement for VW Oil Sludge repairs?
Oil sludge? That sounds like cheap oil. Or maybe short travel trips without proper and thurough warm ups. Both hard on any engine. I have never had that issue as I never have any short drives.(5 miles or less)

Oil leak from my car's engine. Where to repair?

I brought my car to the e-safety check for renewing rego. But it failed. The inspector said that there is oil leaking from engine. I can not visually see the leaking oil. So I have the option to get him to fix it or taking my car to whatever shops until my car's problem is solved. He said this would be a big job.

What is your advice? Should i leave this to him or bring to another repairer?Oil leak from my car's engine. Where to repair?
Take your car to another mechanic for a second opinion. If you can't see an oil leak or see the source of the leak, try putting newspaper under your engine for a day or two to see if any drops of oil are caught by the newspaper. Look at the underside of your engine. An oil leak should be a visible accumulation of oil droplets some place. It is possible that there is an internal engine oil leak. You can monitor this by checking the crankcase oil dip stick every day for at least a week. Oil leak from my car's engine. Where to repair?
unless you trust the inspector get a second opinion! also ask the inspector where the oil is coming freom? the sump gasget? a oil seal? oil pump? head gasget? there are so many...... it could be something real simple to repair? Also there are aditives you can add to your engine oil that can help stop it -if the problem is a gasget- is always better though to replace the gasget?
Hmmm, If you are not able to diagnose this yourself then I would find a trusty garage to check it out.
go to another garage and get a second opinion

    Astro Van.....Oil Pan-leak-repair ?

I have been fixing up my project vehicle a 1986 astrovan that seems to be in good order however it has been sitting for years. After a fuel pump and brakes it runs and stops......i was hoping to paint it and customize interior when i realized it has a slow OIL LEAK. It seems to come from up by the seal. i was told that dropping the pan might be a huge expense more then van is worth. 1) how hard is it (hours rated ) to drop pan, must engine have to be lifted. 2) is it visually possible to see where leak is coming from...such as crankshaft where as it too would be better of to buy other van something i wish to avoid cuz i have invested several hundred in this project w/ dreams of a cool customized van. But i also want be smart about it.

    any ideas...thanksAstro Van.....Oil Pan-leak-repair ?
better check the rear main seal after the pan is off, they go sometimes too and leak oil. you have to loosen the motor mounts and jack the engine up so it will clear the crank. while you have the pan off, you might as well change the oil pump too.

Oil leaking from engine casing crack? how to repair?

hi, my motorcycle (kawa zx9r) decided to take a trip down the street without me, on its side and now it has a hairline crack on the engine casing (its on the left hand side).

i estimate its losing about 15-20 ml per day which is nothing but obviously id still rather it wasnt there.

anyone know what i can use to repair it.

it doesnt have to look asthetically pleasing because you dont realy see it, just needs to get the job done.

thanksOil leaking from engine casing crack? how to repair?
Drain the oil, really clean it up and scuff it with coarse sandpaper, like 80 grit. Apply JB weld,(auto part store) to the crack, after that sets up good then spray it with a can of auto body undercoating. Hope this helps!Oil leaking from engine casing crack? how to repair?
you Can Use JOB weld To do the job. 1st. u got to Sand or grind the area a little to give the JB something to stick to. Then you put it on and let it dry. If u want to you can paint it.

You can get JB weld at walmart.
I work in a motorbike dealership and have used JB weld many times to fix cracks with great success.

Good advice poster no1. Exactly what I would say.
jb weld is worth trying before you change the cases. i have had it work also.

  • I have been reading about repairing a leaking oil pan drain plug with teflon tape.?

My question is how much and where. I figured about 5-6 wraps right after the plug washer but not the whole length of the plug, correct?

Also, another answer explained about a water hose washer, use it between the pan and the drain pan washer?I have been reading about repairing a leaking oil pan drain plug with teflon tape.?
if the plug is stripped out (keeps turning never get tight enough) then new plug kit. If the hole in the oil pan is stripped new oil pan. Now if it just leaks even when tight you could just wrap the threads in teflon tape from the plug washer to the end of the threads. There may have been a small rubber gasket on the plug that feel off or rotted away. Cheap fix would be to get a small piece of cork gasket material and cut it out to the shape and size of the washer. This would be installed between the oil pan and the washer.

All I would say is try it and see whats works for you.I have been reading about repairing a leaking oil pan drain plug with teflon tape.?
Teflon tape might work but not for long. It is the gasket between the bolt head and pan that seals the drain. You can buy just that gasket at an auto parts store. If your drain plug is stripped out, you can get an oversized plug and it will tap new threads for itself as you screw it in.
uh, a new bolt WITH gasket is only a few bucks. fix it right the first time. you can spend more on the teflon tape that the oil is gonna break it down in 3000 miles anyways and leak all over again.
just replace the washer and make shure the threads are good.

if they are not you can get a self taping plug from napa
if the threads aren't stripped buy a new factory plug and gasket

I have a 1998 gmc jimmy. There is a minor oil leak any advice on what i should repair or check first? thanks ?

It depends on where the leak comes from. You can do all sorts of repairs, but if you don't fix the problem, you're throwing money away.

If the engine is dirty, the first step is to clean it. I have heard of people using a carwash to do this. That seems tacky to me - leaving greasy dirt and oil all over the place. You sure don't want to wash all that oil down the drain, either! I'd ask a mechanic or a detailing shop what they do, and go from there.

Next, figure out where the leak is located. Put newspaper or big pieces of cardboard on the floor of the garage, and park the truck over that. In the morning, look where the fresh drops are located, and work your way up from there. Keep in mind that if the oil flows or drips onto something, it can move sideways quite a ways before it falls to the ground.

Now you'll have some idea of what needs to be repaired.

You have a big mess on your hands. Most of these codes indicate a poor air/fuel mix. Buy a can of Amzoil Foaming Cleaner. Use it to clean the throttle body and plate and IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE. It may take two people to do this. One under the hood, and the other in the car. Remove the cover to the throttle body, and have the friend push the gas pedal to the floor. Squirt the Amzoil through every passageway you can find. Follow up with a Gum-out chaser. Do this first with engine off. Use these cleaners to clean the PCV valve and hose. Now, start the van and alternate the cleaners through any vacuum ports you can find, including the PCV valve. Eventually, these cleaners will remove the muck inside the intake manifold and blow the debris out the tailpipe. The O2 sensor(s) will get cleaned and return to normal functioning. For best results, remove the factory junk plugs and install a set of Bosch Platinum or Fusion plugs. Even better, Nippondenso Iridium plugs. You will be amazed at the savings in fuel, and the increase in power!!!! It is dramatic. Expect 15-20% improvement. You may have to have the check engine system reset. Auto Zone does it for FREE! Worst case scenario, go to dealership for a GM reset. They'll charge you, though.

Has anybody experienced repairing and sealing an oil leak on a transformer?

What was the reason and how did you fix it?Has anybody experienced repairing and sealing an oil leak on a transformer?
Depending on where the leak is, there are epoxy products can repair pin-hole leaks that occur during welding at the factory.

It may not work if there is too much head pressure in the transformer.

If the leak is near the top, you can pull a partial vacuum on the transformer and then apply the epoxy.

If the oil level is too high above the leak, there may be too much pressure to make a good seal.Has anybody experienced repairing and sealing an oil leak on a transformer?
isnt a transformer an electrical part? im not really sure what ur talking about but i cant imagine why it has oil....

the problem is that oil makes things hard to fix because it doesnt really let anything stick...

best thing to do would be to weld it but u would have to drain all the oil first and clean up the hole real good to remove any oil residue... then weld it...

but if thats not an option theres specialized epoxies that work under these circumstances .. but be warned.. it might hold up for years but its not a permanent fix... welding is a permanent fix... but like i said i dont really know what is going on in this situation im just trying to help you... i hope that helps.

I blended the gas with the 2 cycle oil but didn't realize the brand i was using and mixed thre ratio 3 times what it was supposed to be . My weedeater won't start and the is some oil residue seeping out of the motor...what would be the correct process to get the thing to work again???Weed eater repair advice my weed eater stopped working and I realized the gasoline blend was too oil rich..?
dump out what is in the tank, remove the spark plug, and holding the weed eater with the sparkplug hole down...pull the starter rope until nothing else comes out the plug hole....put some clean gas (Half a cup) in the tank, and swish it around, dump out...

replace plug , refill with fresh gas, mixed correctly......Weed eater repair advice my weed eater stopped working and I realized the gasoline blend was too oil rich..?
Dump the bad mix, get a fresh plug and make sure the gap is right, reinstall the plug, put in fresh gas and oil mix and it should start. If not, the exhaust may be plugged from the extra oil, but I would guess it will start with the new plug just fine.
Remove the gas, then take the carburetor off and clean it out with carburetor cleaner. Replace your spark plug. Then refill with correct mix of oil and gas. Or take to the repair shop. Or save it for the next garage sale.

Can a cracked firebox inside an oil fired furnace be repaired?

Its an older Columbia furnace. Can a cracked firebox inside an oil fired furnace be repaired?
No technician will attempt this as it would be a liability if someone ended up with carbon monoxide poisoning.

Replacing the heat exchanger or furnace is the way it is done. And only replace the heat exchanger if under warranty otherwise it is not feasible.

It could be repaired but who will accept the liability? Can a cracked firebox inside an oil fired furnace be repaired?
If it is of a cast material it can be brazed. If constructed of sheet metal it can be welded. The big question is WHY did it crack? The metal is old and fatigued? Over heated? Was hot and water got onto it in some way? Was it mounted properly or possibly a problem with the mount caused it to be stressed? Are both the nozzle and ignition system working properly delivering a smooth flame or is it missing, sputtering and/or causing small explosions in the box? Because a failure in the fire box could be catastrophic, all care should be given if you decide to make a repair. Try to find out why so you can fix that problem first and not have a repeat failure and make sure the person doing the work knows their business. It may be prudent to ask what happens if it fails after the repair and burns your house down will your homeowners insurance use that as an excuse to deny payment? They may be fine with a repair if they're made aware and are allowed to inspect and sign off on it.
Repairing a heat exchanger is not recommended, the safe way to go is to either replace the heat exchanger(if it's available) or to replace the furnace.

  • Repair cost engine oil leak?

My 98 toyota avalon has been leaking lots of oil, Have to put a quart or 2 in every week almost. Repair man said found leak at trans line and his solution is to replace RH valve cover gasket, does this sound correct, can trans line leak engine oil, and does anyone know how much this might cost. Thanks for any information.Repair cost engine oil leak?
Nope the engine and trans takes two different kinds of oil so why would it be using one ya feel me. and where is it leaking oil from this is and easy diy. It is probably the valve cover gasket or the oil pan gasket probably no more than 60 minus the oil.Repair cost engine oil leak?
Two quarts a week should be an obviouse identifier, I would get a second opinion just for the heck of it, but do not give any info about the previous diagnosis. I would also recomend checking your pcv valve, it ventalates your engine from positve pressure from blow by, oil leaks will occur at least resistance if the valve is clogged.
Compared to a lot of engine repairs, this is a cheap one. Perhaps the valve cover is leaking OVER the trans line. Either way, you can probably just tighten down the valve cover a little bit. Most Asian VC gaskets don't need replacing, just tightening. Get another opinion. Drive the car to a quicky lube, and ask them if they can spot an oil leak. Get their advice, anyways. Many oil leaks can be traced to the fact that the wrong oil is being used in the engine. Sludge forms, and clogs up the works. Sometimes, the oil pressure relief valve will not drop the oil pressure when it is supposed to, and oil will leak from nearly any loose orifice. De-sludging MAY solve this. Smart people will read their owner's manual and use ONLY the oil that meets Toyota specifications listed there. This means Mobil One, ELF, Pennzoil, Wolf's Head. Some oils made by Castrol meet the spec's, too. Asian cars require JASO specs! Good luck!!!

My sienna is having heavy smoke and I had to put oil often, what do I need to repair on it?

depends on whether or not its smoking outhe the tailpipe or under the car. typically this vehicle after a few miles with develop a valve cover leak. when this happens the oil spills down on top of the exhaust manifold. when the manifold is hot, it will smoke something fierce. have this checked and repaired if its your problemMy sienna is having heavy smoke and I had to put oil often, what do I need to repair on it?
if you are having black smoke coming out the tail pipes you have to change the piston ring's and do a valve job, might as well rebuild the motor or replace it.sorryMy sienna is having heavy smoke and I had to put oil often, what do I need to repair on it?
Bob is correct. It depends on where the oil is going. If you're leaking externally, it may be something as simple as a leaking valve cover gasket that is dripping on a part of the exhaust and creating a nice smoke show in the process.

If the oil is leaking internally and it's being burned inside the engine, the cause could be anything from leaking valve stem seals to bad piston rings.
a valve job.including valve guides...best bet is to get rebuilt head [trade in] from any auto pts...[advance,zone,oreilly[napa] shop around....

A friend told me that i needed to remove just the top 2 parts where you add the oil to repair my oil and water?

my car seems to mixing oil and water which cause my car to drip out water from the tail pipe along with smoke. a friend told me that all i needed to do is take off top part where my oil is added and take off the other side as well. now these parts are by my spark plugs. i did remove them both and cleaned them and put a temp glue around for now im a single mother of four and am on a budget so i used the glue instead of the gasket that goes around. my problem started due to over heating problems. the line from the radiator to the motor had a big leak.i had it fixed and the next day my car was smoking bad and water was coming out my car ever sounds like it wants to turn off if i have it in park. now some one told me my problem maybe deeper in side and needs to be torqued. my car is a acura legend 1988 it is an older car, but it also seems it has some side parts that need repairing as well does this type of car have gaskets on the side as well.please help me i need a car for work and to Take my kids to school and the most sucky part is i have push a basket down the street loaded with food...........lol .....please hellllpp me im tired of not having my car.A friend told me that i needed to remove just the top 2 parts where you add the oil to repair my oil and water?
Ok, for starters the things that you are saying don't quite make sense and I understand this from a single womans point of view (not trying to insult), but what I'm thinking is going on is that your head gasket is blown. Plain and simple. This is almost the number one reason that you will have oil and water mix. Now, smoke out your tail pipe in this case is probably actually steam. the other thing to worry about is if the water gets in to your oil, it can cause damage to the internal engine parts. I would not operate this vehicle unitl the head gasket is replaced. Now this is just a guess and some testing should be done to ascertain exactly what the problem is. I would suggest finding a person who knows how to do a LEAKDOWN test, not a compression test, and have this done in order to figure out if your head gasket is blown. You can also talk to your mechanic about sniffing the coolant for exhaust gases. This where a tool is used to find out if exhaust gases have been mixing with your coolant (assuming you have any left at this point) don't let your car run out of coolant, or oil, and don't drive it what ever you do.A friend told me that i needed to remove just the top 2 parts where you add the oil to repair my oil and water?
Sounds like a head gasket to me. Check you oil, and see what color it is? If it looks like chocolate milk then you have coolant in your oil....blown head gasket. They aren't to hard to replace if you know what you are doing but from the sound of your question it might be too hard for you.

Dealership didn't put oil in my car after they changed it and my engine seized. What repair options do I have?

In regards to the current motor in the vehicle....none. Do not under any conditions accept a ';repair'; to the current engine. If you do so they will do the cheapest rebuild possible and you'll sign away their liability the day you drive it off the lot.

If this information is solid and you can 100% prove the dealership failed to refill your engine with oil you are entitled to no less than a new engine...unless of course the vehicle is 15 years old (old or high mileage), then they will have to ';settle'; on an amount of the engines worth prior to their mishap and cut you a check or offer to repair it.

This is not uncommon, particularly in dealerships that try and turn over 15 minute oil changes. If you're experiencing any difficulty with them now or begin to experience difficulty then seek out a lawyer. The charges for letting a legal professional handle the situation will be less than the cost of repairing the car out of your pocket.

Hope this helps!Dealership didn't put oil in my car after they changed it and my engine seized. What repair options do I have?
You should be in the drivers seat here. You don't say what kind of vehicle or the mileage, but if it is fairly new or low mileage...tell them you will only accept a new engine. If it is pretty well used then a rebuilt would be appropriate (an exchange ...not using your current engine to rebuild). Others here suggest an attorney....That would cost money you don't need to spend. If they give you any problems contact the Attorney General of your state. No cost to you and they have a lot of clout dealing with things like this. Don't bother with the BBB...they have no power to do anything. Businesses must join and if they do not...no information is available.Dealership didn't put oil in my car after they changed it and my engine seized. What repair options do I have?
Since the damage caused by running the engine w/no oil is catastrophic there is no way to gauge the full extent of what is wrong, or what will go wrong in the future. You should not allow this engine to be repaired but insist in the replacement of the engine with a new one. The heat generated fatigues the metal used in all components of the engine from valve train to bearings/seats to cylinders, rods and pistons. Even if the engine is repaired to the point where it seems to be running smoothly and as before, you can count on problems down the road. And that is usually where you will be when they rear their ugly heads, down the road, in the middle of no-where, probably in a hurry to a very important event or appointment. Save yourself the headache and tell them you are conferring with your attorney to decide what recourse you have and I bet you get a new engine out of it.
Insist on a new engine! Dealer is responsible- period. Call the Better Business Bureau and ask them to help.
have them repair it,they are at fault
take it back to them, and make them put a new engine in....

If you did this yourself (since dealerships rarely make this mistake) you need to replace the bearings in your engine, and possibly new pistons, rings, and get your cylinders honed again...Or get a crate engine off ebay and swap it out...
Repairing a siezed engine is next to impossible, because there is simply too much damage. It would be wiser, although not necessarily cheaper, to install a new engine. I seriously doubt that the dealer did this. I am more inclined to believe, like another answerer suggested, that you did. If the dealer did it, you would not be asking what repair options you have. You would be asking what legal options you have.
make the dealership replace the engine - if they refuse, get an attorney.
Make the dealsership replace the motor otherwise hire a lawyer.
If your engine seized, you are probably going to need at least a new short block. You most likely scorched the pistons and bearings so I would make them give you a new engine.

Your heads may have gotten warped too so have them checked. You may need the whole new long block.

They caused it so they should fix it for free. If they give you any trouble, get a lawyer and sue them.
call a good attorney he should be able 2 help u out u need a new motor
THEY WILL EITHER REPAIR IT OR REPLACE IT, WHICH EVER IS THE CHEAPEST FOR THEM.

I WOULD ASK THEM TO REPLACE IT WITH A DEALER REBUILT ENGINE AND NOT GO WITH ANT TYPE OF REPAIRS.

    Car oil leak repair trouble?

My car (1993 Toyota camry), has slightly oil leak. I went to Toyota dealer for fix. after check, I was told there are 3 leaks, distributor O-ring, Valve seal and oil pan gasket. the main leak is from oil pan. so I decide to fix oil pan gasket, cost 300$. plus wheel adjust, change brakes, total $500. I put car in in the morning, will pick up after work. but at afternoon, I was told they fixed the gasket, after driving test there is still leak, they have redo the work. I have to wait to next day.

Next day, when I pick up car, Service guy told me they found another leak, main seal, to fix it costing 1000$. I suspicious they try to make me spend more money, and I did not see much oil on the bottom. So I said I can afford that cost. I will keep eye on it.

Just I drive out of the shop, on the way I found smoke came out under hood, I drove back, service guy told me it was oil drip on exhaust cause the smoke. I said OK, I'll keep eye on it.

    In the following weekend, my wife and I could still sense the burning smell. On Monday I drive to the shop, service guy lift car in air to make sure that's oil burn. To my surprise, there is oil collected under the car, He told me it's main seal leak. I said I never has this problem before, how come after your repair my gasket, then there is this problem out standing? He said, '; you mean to fix gasket, cause this leak? No, they are not related, main seal is up up on top. the repair made the leak worse? It's possible, we can give you $300 credit, so you have to pay $700 to fix the main seal leak. ';

I have no experience how to deal with this case, I said I could pay another $200 to fix main seal leak. He would take it. I want to talk to their manager. I want to hear from your suggestion, what should I do?

Apparently, they made my car a new problem but they won't admit.Car oil leak repair trouble?
Check to see if they are a member of the BBB. If they are get there BBB # and turn them in. If not call the states attorney generals office and go from there. Some red tape But, you do want to be vindicatedCar oil leak repair trouble?
The main seal leak is not related to their repair, What they did was not realize you also had a main seal leak until the oilpan was off. I think their offer is very fair and they are trying to resolve the problem in a fair way with the $300 credit. The seal they are talking about is around the rear of the crankshaft, and involves a lot more than just taking off the oil pan. If you don't fix it, engine could catch fire or you'll get nauseated from the oil fumes . Sometimes the truth is hard, but it's the truth.
Unfortunately with oil leaks, once you repair one, another springs a leak. Reason being: when all seals are in tact and not leaking, there is pressure within the system. Once you get a leak in an older (more than 5-10 years old) car and you have a gasket, seal or O-ring replaced, the pressure, now added back to the system, can blow out another gasket, seal or O-Ring. The dollars spent to completely repair this type of aggravation can get costly and usually costs more than the vehicle is worth. When the 'main seal' has gone, it is time to start considering buying another vehicle.

In your above case, it sounds like the garage is trying to make money off of you - nickel and dime turns into thousands in the long run. We'll just say they are probably giving you half truths. Keep pestering the manager if you want to work done

If you are concerned about trading in a vehicle with an oil leak and feel it would reduce the value - here's a little trick - and only to use when you bring it to trade in - Marvel Mystery Oil - 1 teaspoon (and no more)directly into your oil (this will 'expand' gaskets/seals just enough) - drive the car to a self wash car wash - clean the engine and drive right to the dealer - I know, sneaky, but then again you are the one trying to get rid of a headache.
