If my car was low on oil could it damage car, if yes what would i have too do to repair it..?

if i get a new engine for a vauxhall astra 1.6LS x reg how much would it be? plus wud it affect the value off my car?

thank u xIf my car was low on oil could it damage car, if yes what would i have too do to repair it..?
Oil is called the ';blood'; of an engine. In a car magazine, they once drove a car with no oil to see how far it will go. They got about 500 miles. I'm surprised they made it that far.

So with no oil, 500 miles. With good oil - 100K to 200K miles. So now you have an idea of how important oil is.

If you have done damage by having too little lubrication, every part of the engine was ';rubbed'; raw. Every moving part is probably now worn down. Just about the only (general) thing is that you should have your engine rebuilt (or do an engine swap). If you were to do an engine swap, you have the option of getting a good used engine or completely new engine from the factory.

If you were to replace the engine with an exact duplicate / replacement then if would not effect the resale value that much (who would know). As a buyer anytime I get the knowledge (or feeling) that the previous owner did NOT take care of one part of the car, it tells me there are other hidden problems. If my car was low on oil could it damage car, if yes what would i have too do to repair it..?
are you sure the oil is making it get hot ?if it shows enough oil on the dipstick it should be alright ,shouldnt get hot, id think more like a stuck thermostat or plugged radiator ,low on coolant, radiator fan not working . id check out those areas if my car was overheating
Yes, if your oil gets too low, it will damage the engine.

If minor damage, a thicker oil may suffice. If major, a new engine.
It depends on how low it was and for how many miles. As long as engine has enough oil for lubrication, it will be okay. Engine probably will be okay if you had a quart or so. The reason for the extra oil is for cooling. With the recommended oil level, the engine will run cooler. The hotter it runs, the faster it wears.
If the oil was right off the dipstick then yes, it can damage it seriously. However, sounds much more like a cooling system problem - lack of coolant, clogged radiator, stuck thermostat, several things. I'd get those looked at first before worrying about an oil problem.
Cars can generally run ok when the oil only just shows on the dipstick. You have to completely run out for it to become a problem.
Yes, being low on oil over a pretty short time could seize the engine. Since there are no Vauxhalls in the US I can't predict a price, but an average engine job on a small 4 cylinder here runs at least $2500 USD, usually more.
What do you mean, specifically, when you say running low on oil?

If you mean that the oil check/dipstick has gone down to the ';add oil'; mark, then engine damage is very unlikely.

If the reading has dropped entirely off the stick, there is very little oil left in the engine sump, so damage is very possible, as you do not know how much oil is left to lubricate the engine.

You MIGHT still be OK, if the low level exists for only a short time and short distance, but you might also be into the area of saying goodbye to the engine. Except by draining the sump, you cannot tell how much oil is in the engine, so you cannot know what the possibilities really are.

I would suggest taking it to a mechanic and asking for a check of the engine.

To avoid an invitation of bad results, do NOT mention your concern about oil. Ask about the car overall, and ask only about the engine condition because you are considering a sale of the car.
Most definatley. If will ruin you car quick, fast, and in a hurry.

repairing depends on how hot you let it get. Normally if you run it too long without oil, it will lock up. You can say goodbye to that engine.

If not It usually will required major repairs.

I've never heard of a vauxhall astra 1.6LSx reg engine. Go to a dealer and ask him for the price!
If you run low on oil providing you have topped it up to the correct level and there is no unusual noise from the engine,or smoke of a blueish colour from the exhaust then the oil will not cause it to overheat but a cooling problem will---loss of water
