2001 Taurus keeps leaking oil, even after 6 repairs?

I have no idea what's going on, but my Taurus keeps leaking oil (about one drop per inch of road, so). It runs a little hotter than mid-point, and when I'm stopped at lights, it visibly smokes a little.





The thing is, I've spent probably 2k in repairs for JUST AN OIL LEAK at the dealership, but it keeps coming back. 64k mileage, what can I do at this point, I don't trust the dealer since he doesn't seem to be doing a good job.





Is this even a serious problem? I've read some places that a minor oil leak in older cars is normal and no cause for concern. Thoughts?

You're getting taken for every time you're willing to spend. The dealership knows what they're doing because you keep coming back and paying them as long as they leave the leak.





Try to look under your car to see where the leak is occurring. Do you see oil around the oil filter, or oil pan? Once you find out exactly what is leaking, take your car to a regular mechanic,NOT the dealership. They should easily be able to fix an oil leak.

I think you should go back to the dealer and tell them they didn't fix it right like they said they would.





Typically the pan seal is the source of the leak. While a gasket may be the usual repair, they need to add an extra sealant to it since you probably have a slight bend in it at some point.
first you never go to a dealer for repairs...cost will be higher and less know how....is the last place to go... always,,,, dealer in business to sell not fix...and yes any oil leak serious problem... but many are easy to fix.. find a shop to work on your car.. ask your friends where they go... or start looking for places that have a lot of cars there every day is a good sign they have good business and oil leaks are normal but never good.. find a good job and have it looked at

My experience with older bikes ';especially metrics'; says that your leak is more than likely the cause of a bad gasket either valve cover or jug base gasket. either one is not hard to replace but it will take a little time and you should have a repair manual handy for the sequence and specs for your bike. Do like the ';themechanic1128'; said. Find out where the leak is before doing any work. Clean the engine thoroughly with ';engine degreaser';. You can get it at any auto parts store. first of all, what kind of ';old motorcycle'; do you have? and is it an oil leak or air leak? give a little more info....
If the leak is on the face of the cylinder then no , chances are it's not cost effective. most cycles have removable cylinders so just replace the bad cylinder. It's more likely that you have a bad gasket somewhere that is the source of your oil leak, check closely before you spend money on a what could be a cheap fix.
id start by buying a seal kit for a complete overhaul.take the time to remove all cxover and market and sort neatly all screws and prts.then replace all the gaskets and all fluids.of corse have a manuel to help to assist u along the way also provides a better way of remove and installation of gaskets and parts .good luck.

release all of the pressure (make it go all the way down). Look for a bolt or screw that will be located at the base of the hydraulic cylinder. Take it out and fill. Replace bolt/screw and test.

that year model mercedez was natorious for leaks at the front of the valve cover gasket where the timing chain is. It needs to be repaired. Any ';sealer'; you may find could do much more damage than a leak. Keep an eye on your oil level and it doesn't matter if it does leak a little.

A plugged exhaust or converter will force exhaust by the piston rings along with unburnt fuel. The fuel will wash oil from the cylinder wall causing wear. Too rich of a mixture due to a bad O2 sensor is another cause.


If your rings are bad the cylinder walls are probably damaged as well. By the time you pay the machine shop to bore it out and buy over sized pistons and rings, not to mention removal and installation of the engine, you can probably buy a used engine and have it installed for less than you can fix the old one.

piston rings will fry if you are overloading your engine alot, hot rodding it or pulling very heavy loads. Not changing your oil often enough. Or just alot of miles on the engine. Those things are thin and they do wear out. Most 4 cylinders will last 120,000 to 150,000 and V6- V8 up to 300,000 depending on care.





But basically depending on engine and accessiblity you are looking at atleast 10 hours book time. Most shops charge 100 an hour for engine work.

it can be any number of things. a common one is modifications to the engine ECU (computer). Those $20 ';super chips'; you see on eBAy do that a lot, a freind of mine ruined his mustang engine with one of those, twice. depending on the car, I'd say it's at least a $1,000 job, if there's no other damage.

Don't know your model of car. I suspect it is front-wheel-drive. On a rear-wheel, the driveshaft, the transmission, and clutch drop. A hooked flanged tool pulls the old seal out, and another special tool fits into the doughnut hole of the new seal so you can hammer it in straight. On a Chevy pickup (rear-wheel-drive), the costs is under $150 at the garage. With a FWD, they have to remove a drive chain that rotates the front axle. Compare that to a Mercedes, which uses needle-bearings. A Mercedes, they pull the engine block to bench press the crankshaft out one direction, flip the block, press the crankshaft out the other direction. About $5,000. Some of that cost is the name of the car, besides that they use needle bearings. you have to pull the trans, torque converter+ flex plate. there is a plate mounted to the block that holds in the old seal. Pull the plate, change the seal, and reassemble. Good Luck

This car has 200,000 miles...ran great prior to this...is it worth fixing? Camry has been very dependable until now. Get a few estimates on the repair costs. A Camry with 200K miles isn't worth much but if the repairs are reasonable, repairing it will be much cheaper than replacing it.





My mantra has always been; ';I'd rather pay $600 twice a year to fix an old car then to pay $300 a month for a new one.';

That car has reached the mileage and age where it will start calling for parts and repair, alternator, WP, starter, 1/2 shafts etc. etc. So you'll be fixing an almost 9yo car to, in effect, make payments on.


Don't believe those that say it'll last 250k, they haven't worked at import shops like I did. Some do w/o a lot of trouble, any will with work, a lot become money pits, soaking up a lot of $100. to $200. repairs right before the motor or trans dies.

IIRC, there has not been a new oil refinery built in this country in over 20 years. The refineries are old, and wearing out. They can no longer maintain full production capacity 100% of the time, so even if crude oil were going for $30.00 a barrel, we'd be facing gasoline shortages due to production capacity.





We need to allow oil companies to build modern new refineries, and we need to encourage development of alternative fuel sources in order to break the stranglehold OPEC and the big oil companies have on not only the American Economy, but the world's economy.

It depends where the oil is leaking from.





If the oil is leaking from the oil filter or the oil drain plug, a full service should fix it. If it is leaking from anywhere else, you will need to get a garage to find the source of the leak and repair that specific problem.
How bad is it leaking? Just a little seep, or is it actually dripping? Can you see where it's coming from?





In my experience, the most common place for oil to leak from is the seal around the oil pan. In this case, you can generally keep driving it until the leak gets too bad to ignore. (On my current car, the oil pan is greasy, but it never actually reaches the ground)





Regardless, no, ';a full service'; usually just means changing the oil and filters and whatnot, it doesn't actually involve any repairs...and whatever is leaking, this is a repair. It could be simple and relatively cheap (probably is...either the oil pan seal, threads on the plug, oil filter, something like that), or it could be involved and more expensive (like it's coming from the timing cover or something that would be a ***** to get off).





You should be able to figure out where it's coming from, if you can get under it. You may be able to identify what part is leaking yourself.

It could something as simple as a bad oil pan gasket, or a bad oil filter. In some cars the oil comes from a leak in some other place and it leaks all the way down and it just looks like that's where it comes from.





A clean engine will make it easier to establish where the leak is. Engines can be cleaned (washed) this should not only be done from the top but also from the bottom (chassis wash).
If you dont know the answer to your question it would be unwise for you to carry out your own service. Chances are the oil is coming from the sump plug or oil filter. if its not from one of these things then it could prove more costly and will not be picked up on a standard service. Dont mess around take it to a reputable garage and get them to have a look. good luck.

Could be the main seal. If it is just a few drops/day, leave it alone assuming it isn't too messy. Check the oil filter and the nut on the bottom of the drain pan. Maybe they just arnt tight.
What do you mean ';full service'; If you mean ';tune up'; the answer is No.... This is a separate issue. There are tons of places an oil would leak from. Most common places would be oil pan gasket or valve cover gasket. To check where it's leaking from open the hood and look around the engine and see if the oil is leaking from the top of the engine. If it looks dry on top then most likely it would be the oil pan gasket, but again there are other things that would leak too like oil pressure sensor etc.(that could be a very strong leak).... very unlikley that a service would fix your oil leak unless it is leaking from a split oil filter seal or the sump bung has came loose. could be any number of possibilities for oil leaking. :-sump gasket, rock cover gasket, oil feed pipes, oil pressure switch and so on. best to get it checked at a garage. or get underside of engine and vehicle power washed so that you can see were oil is leaking from.

No this is not repairable also the oil is there as a coolant and usually is considered a carcinogen you should contact your local electric supplier tho have it replaced.

In almost all gearcases the oil is added to the bottom half of the gearcase during assembly not after assembly. Incompadable oil will do more damage than being 1/8 cup low. Use it as is.
Probably automatic transmission fluid, there should be a plug either on top or close to the top of the transmission
you should replace the oil as they do not hold a lot of oil in the first place. call your local appliance parts store and they should have the correct type of oil, and be able to tell you where to fill it. you will need to give them the brand and model number of your machine. good luck, hope this gives you the info that you need.

';heating oil tank';... I assume that your talkin about the propane tank out in the yard. It's not uncommon to smell gas near or around your tank even if it's not leaking. I mean, your not gonna smell it if it's not leaking, but it's probably not leaking enough to be concerned. My parents' house and my grandma's house both have propane tanks. Especially when it starts to get cooler you can smell gas when walking around them. I'm not quite sure why this is, but i don't believe its of any concerning matter.


If it is in need of repair then it should only be done by a licensed professional. I'm all for doing stuff yourself, but one spark near a leaking fuel tank could singe a few hairs. It shouldn't explode, but may shoot a flame from the location of the leak. Not a lot of good news. I assume the tank is buried. The tank rusts from the inside out. It is usually caused by water (Condensaton). If the tank is not repaced it will need constant repair. I always recommend having the tank filled at the end of the season. find the leak and clean it with a degreasor . get some soft lead and knock it into the hole with a hammer this sounds strange but as you pound the lead into the hole it gets pressed through the hole it and seals it up tight

Are you sure it is an OIL puddle, and not water from the A/C evaporator drain? Check your oil drain plug; make sure it is tight.
If you don't recognize the source of the problem, return to the repair shop to be rechecked for what was just repaired and if they bring up something different, have them show this to you before paying any additional cost.

It took about 4 days, then it worked itself totally loose.Contact the dealer or the place where you had your repairs done. Let them know what is going on. Check the drain plug and the oil filter. See where the oil is coming from. The filter is hard to see, it's high on the back of the motor, right side. Sticks back, not down.

Do it yourself - much easier - just loosen the bolts - clean the rubbish and old oil off and use a gasket sealant like Hermatite Red - about 拢2.99 from a car accs shop.

Yes use red hermatite, block the oilways, seize the engine, then I buy it, my friends sounce a replacement engine and i make a tidy profit.


Really check the bolts are tight, get the riht Torque settings and a decent torque wrench, chances are they wil be slightly loose, if the leak persists follow the proceedure in the workshop manual, use a very thin bead of Golden Hermatite or Instant Gasket if nescessary. Do not overtighten, strip, or snap off the bolts. When the leak is cured get shot of the Omega, the 2.5 is nasty and Gutless. get a BMW%26gt;
Whether it is worth fixing depends upon how much is leaking. I have cars that have leaked a small amount of oil all the time but not enough to be a problem, except for looking bad, check your oil regularly and it should not be a problem. However if you wish to change the rocker cover seal it should only tame a competant mechanic about an hour and the seal should not cost much. Total about 拢30.
If it is just the cam cover then not too expensive. However, if it turns out to be the head gasket then that is quite an expensive job. A cam cover refit normally means a new gasket and perhaps an oil change, which will probably take and hour to do so something like 拢40 for the gaskets, 拢40 for oil and 拢100 labour.
The gaskets themselves are cheap, the cost would be in labour.


Why not have a go yourself? It's just a question of unbolting the cam covers, hoicking the old gaskets out, making sure the mating surfaces are clean and putting the new ones on. Don't bolt 'em down too tight or you could distort the covers. Let the gaskets do the sealing. There's no vast pressure in there, the covers are really just to prevent oil splashing out and dirt getting in.





If you don't fancy getting your fingers oily, just ring a few garages for a quote - it shouldn't be too dear, it's a really simple %26amp; quick job.
i own a repair shop and this is usually about a 50 dollar job on one of those there real easy to work on ,so there's no real difficulty in putting that one on,it may cost a little more considering most shops have different labor rates on this stuff,good luck with it hope this helps.
clara forget garages and cheap seal paste, find anyone who knows a little about cars ask them to put new cover gasket on its so so so easy and cheap, ay trust me ive done it a few times and im not a machanic. best of luck. ps dont just tighten bolts its leakin for a reason, just replace with new and bolt down to hand tight without to much presure ok.

Oil can leak from a variety of different places. Your question is too vague to provide a definative answer.


Some vehicles have a propensity for a certain type of oil leak. So if you identified the vehicle, that would help answer your question. For example, there are thousands of GM V6 engines that leak badly from the oil pump seal. This particular seal can be replaced in about an hour by an experienced mechanic. So that repair would cost around $100.


You have two basic choices:


1. Take your car to a trusted mechanic and pay him whatever he asks for fixing the leak.


2. Do some research to determine where the oil is coming from. This is very helpful if you don't know a mechanic you can trust. The best way to locate an oil leak is to start with a clean engine. Take your car to one of those quarter car washes (these days you will need at least 8 quarters). Many of these places have an engine degreaser setting on the soap dispenser. Give the engine a thorough washing. Be careful to avoid air intakes and electrical connections. Drive back home and place some paper or cardboard under the front end of the car. This will give you an idea of when the leak is coming from, but remember that oil not only flows downhill but is also carried by wind currents underneathj the hood.


Get out a bright flashlight and a mirror. Examine the motor for traces of oil. If there is a leak, sooner or later your will find the trail.

it actually depends on what vehicle it's coming from, not where. No matter where it's coming from, you have a bad seal somewhere and it'll cost you plenty unless it's just the oil pan seal (but even those can be a nightmare depending on the car!) . Better hopeto god it's not a Chevy Blazer or GMC Jimmy. You have to remove the engine and possibly the transmission to get to the gasket, but on most cars, it drops right out and can be replaced i about 2 hours or less. Start small by buying Stop oil leak for now, you put it where you put oil and it is effective ...,you can get it in any auto store, clean where you see the leak and leave it , .run it like you do regularly and observed . It is usually the HEAD GASKET but like I said ; start small.

Usually repairable, depending on what's wrong with it, but it might be simpler to replace it with one from a scrappy. As far as I recall nothing else needs to be removed, you should be able to drop it after unfastening the securing bolts with a socket. Don't forget to empty it first! Don't spend too much money, good scrapyard should have one all cleaned up and ready to go. All you need is a gasket and a socket or spanner. Good luck.

Depends on where the leak is coming from, this could be major or minor it could be as simple as an oil plug, a bad seal on the oil filter or you need a new oil pan or you could have a craked engine block or you need a head gasket.


Do you have oil in the radiator? Caution only check radiator when the engine is cold!


If you have milky engine coolant the repairs can be costly.


As for the cord hanging down from under the car, sounds like possibly a gas line or a break line possibly hard to say.Take the car in to get checked, just don't agree to pay for any repairs till you know what you are getting yourself into.


Once you find out what is wrong and how much it is going to cost to repair it, as yourself if it is worth it, and it would not be a bad idea to take it to a second mechanic for another estimate or even call about and estimate, you are not obligated for repairs if you did not sign anything or verbalize an agreement to do repairs.You may have to pay for the first estimate however. The car can keak oil from many different areas.....you have to look top bottom and sides of motor... Start with valve covers,Timeing chain cover, front main seal, oil pan gasket... and the rear of engine ( reat main seal) .. On front wheel drives rear main seal will be between trans and engine. Now days even the easiest being valve cover gasket can be a very had job because of the things that have to be removed b4 getting to gasket. oil pan gasket can be easy most of the times
i own a shop and is there a possibility that this one might still be under warranty,because if it is that would pay for the repair,if not there is a lot of places one can leak from,too many to mention here,try narrowing it down to a certain area and then ask the question,right now it could be one of ten places it could leak from,good luck i hope his helps.

hmmm when you say there is oil in your cylinders i have to ask how much ? if it a small amount trere is a cheap solution ...


replace your spark plugs with a good ristor plug (platum tip)


a resistor plug will produce a hotter spark to burn off the oil with the fuel...(if your not buring too much oil now try this first..


next try a compression test in the cylinders if compression is low you probbley have bad piston rings and the whole engine nees to come apart to fix it very expensive


if the compression is slightly low ulually a bad vale seal is leaking at withch point in most cases a good mechanic could fix for a few hundred dllars...if its running okay try the plugs first

What I would use is go to an art shop and get some liquin medium. Put some with a sable brush or some very soft soft brush under and over it. Be very gentle. This should dry in about a day and form a film that is glossy and bond with the rest of the painting. Hoho, did you damage something at your boyfriends house? I don't think any glue that isn't specificly made for reparing paintings won't do. The paint will dissolve and you'll smudge the area around it as well. Go to one of those painting shops, they always have something suitable.

Best you can do it take the painting down and check for more of those spots. They seldom come alone unless you bumped into it. Do not bend the cracked part or check with your fingers if it is still connected. Check with your eyes only. Use a magnifying glass.





The best way to deal with a crack like that is to insert some glue with a syringe. Just the tiniest drop of glue. it will spread out and you only want to fix it in it's place. Do not try to get the whole area covered in glue or it will run from the crack and you REALLY have a problem. Gently place or push the fragment back in it's spot with a soft brush.





If you really feel secure and have a stead hand inject the glue from the back. Under an angle 'emerge' just the hole in the needle and insert a drop. That way you don't have to make the crack any bigger or increase the damage to the chipped paint. Try to aim between the threads and the hole will almost always disapear by itself.





Because most pharmacies are hesitant to give out needles to just anyone, ask you family doctor for a needle (short and wide version, long and thin will need enormous pressure so that is no good). The syringe itself you can get at the pharmacy.





For glue you can use acrylic medium (for thinning paint) or Caparol (glue/medium) ask in your local art shop. You can water it down a bit if it is to thick but drops should not run but have some yoghurt like consistency to them.





Missing pieces you can fill in with oil or acrylic paint but unless you have some painting skill I would recommend against that....actually I would recommend against the whole procedure but...you asked and I answered.

If your not paying the bill and the shop that did the work is have them stick a brand new engine in the car not a rebuilt or a used because you never know how it was treated before. If the engine is blown, it needs replaced. Running metal on metal at 3000 times a minute without lubrication is going to destroy everything inside in short order. If the engine was stopped immediately after the valve blew out, it may be possible to rebuild it. If this was the shops fault, and you aren't paying for the repair, tell them they need to replace the engine. You will most likely get an engine from a wrecked car, so make sure you hound them for all the details, (mileage, etc.) and make them put a warranty (in writing) on the replacement motor.
An oil related failure on an engine will affect every rotating component. i would have it completely disassembled and all parts measured and inspected. if you do not then you may be OK for a year, then the engine will fail and they will not pay for it again. If they will only do the bare minimum, make sure that all oil lines and the radiator which probably has an oil cooler is replaced. Small metal pieces in the oil travel through the system and they will be caught until the engine gets to full temp and then they will start to circulate through the system causing the same failure again. Don't let them tell you they flushed it, it's ';OK';. That's a lie. Try to have the work done at your mechanics and have them reimburse you for the cost. That gives the garage a fiduciary responsibility to you. In other words your paying the bill so they have to make you happy!! Good luck!!

if it is just an oil to help protect the surface a bit and bring out the grain i personally would use Danish oil or teak oil these are the two oils i use on solid wood work surfaces after i have installed them you can get theme from most good diy stores
Oil doesn't repair wood. It depends on the type of protection you want.Also finished color is a concern. I've had good luck with Tung oil. Check it out. Go to a large home improvement store or woodshop and compare finishes, color, price, ease of application,etc....
